Grain’s Clover Collection

We are thrilled to celebrate the autumnal equinox with the introduction of our newest cork collection, Clover, this week at Colony in New York. The collection is a further exploration of one of the most inspiring natural materials we have had the privilege to work with.

Through this new work, we introduce the use of dark brown cork which we began to explore this past year through a special client project. Dark brown cork is achieved through a toasting process, allowing us to use cork that is discolored or otherwise unusable. This process not only eliminates a potential waste material, but it does so while adding value through its rich chocolate coloration.

Initial sketches had a light and floral feel, but the final results are much more architectural and grounded. The shapes continue to change with the introduction of light, shadow and movement.

The collection consists of four distinct tables that can be realized in all natural, dark brown or a graphic mix of the two colors. Each piece has been designed in a standard size with component adaptability allowing for client customization without creating too much waste in the form of off-cuts.

As a small independent studio and manufacturing shop, we are uniquely set up to collaborate with our clients on their particular visions for our work. This collection was designed with the intention to continue to do that well.

Cork is harvested from the outer bark of the cork oak tree about every nine years without harming the tree in any way. This makes cork rapidly renewable and a powerful carbon sink.

Due to the regeneration process, the more bark that is harvested from the tree, the more carbon is absorbed. Because of this carbon sequestration, integrating more cork into our studio practice became one of our Climate Neutral goals for footprint reduction this year.

We hope that these tables resonate with their striking sculptural forms and resilient velvet finish because we continue to be so encouraged by the potential of this incredible material.

If you are in New York, please stop by Colony, 324 Canal Street, September 23 - 30, 2022 to see the full collection. The gallery is open Monday - Friday, 12:00 - 6:00 pm or by appointment.

If you aren’t able to make it, you can see the full collection on our site now or reach out to us directly here.

We'd love to get your feedback!
